lives at stake in the amazon
A natural gas project in the Peruvian Amazon could do irreparable harm to the indigenous people living there, as well as to the pristine ecosystem in which they live. Yet the project — already operating in a government protected reserve — moves forward.

The energy companies involved have now asked the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which is partially funded by US taxpayer dollars, for a loan. A broad array of local and international organizations have asked the IDB to attach specific human rights and environmental protections to the loan.

vulnerable children in iraq
The effect of the war on children who have been separated from their parents is almost too painful to think about. Exposed to fear, hunger, disease, assault, and abduction, they are the most vulnerable population in the country. Among them are children who were separated from their parents by the war itself, street children, and children who were living in institutions when the war broke out.
Thousands of Iraqi children are living like this because of the war. Several charitable organizations have formed projects and clinics to help. Four of such clinics treat an average of 1,850 patients daily; 70-80 percent of their patients are children

the coffee crisis

In more than 50 countries around the world, 25 million coffee farmers and their families face deep poverty and misery due to a drastic fall in world coffee prices. The price paid to farmers has fallen by more than 70% over the past five years. Taking inflation into account, families are earning less for their product than their ancestors did 100 years ago!

This crisis has been brought on by a worldwide oversupply of coffee that allows coffee corporations to buy beans at rock bottom prices - prices so low that they don't even begin to cover the costs of production.
